Jack Starks is a Persian Gulf War vet who suffers from a head injury that has turned his workd upside-down. Inflicted with amnesia, Jack is charged with killing a policeman and institutionalized. Dr. Thomas Becker is conducting sensory deprivation experiments using straight jackets, of which Jack is made an unwilling subject. While in the experiments, Jack foresees his own death and must unweave the puzzle surrounding his life in order to same himself and the ones he loves. Johnny Depp plays Dean Corso, a rare books dealer. Corso is hired by Boris Balkan, a scholar who specializes in books on Satanism, to track down the only two remaining copies of THE NINE GATES OF THE KINGDOM OF SHADOWS, wich is a rare text with illustrations that are supposedly done by Lucifer himself. His investigation to find the books leads him to Europe, where he notices he is being followed by a strange girl who seems to take a role as his gaurdian angel. Soon everyone who contacts the book except Corso begin to die.
