Based on John Grisham's best selling novel. Mitch McDeere is a young Harvard Law student. He turns down many offers from prominent firms when a small but wealthy firm in Memphis showers him with money and gifts. He ingores his wifes initial apprehension about the firm and begins work there. Soon after two fellow lawyers in the firm die. Mitch is now beginning to believe his wife and launches his own investigation. What he finds is the firm is a front for organized crime, he also finds that no one has made it out alive. Johnny Depp plays Dean Corso, a rare books dealer. Corso is hired by Boris Balkan, a scholar who specializes in books on Satanism, to track down the only two remaining copies of THE NINE GATES OF THE KINGDOM OF SHADOWS, wich is a rare text with illustrations that are supposedly done by Lucifer himself. His investigation to find the books leads him to Europe, where he notices he is being followed by a strange girl who seems to take a role as his gaurdian angel. Soon everyone who contacts the book except Corso begin to die.
