Danny and Walter are staying with their dad and sister in a large fixer-upper house after their parents have divorced. Walter is the older and more athletic of the two while Danny has a very vivid imagination. Acting as brothers do, they seem to be constantly bickering. After one such fight, Danny is exploring the house and discovers a seemingly forgotten space game. Danny pesters his brother into playing the game which begins an adventure that none of them will ever forget. Catherine is the troubled youngest daughter Robert a brilliant yet mentally ill mathmatician who recently passed away. Left alone in their Chicago home Catherine is joined by her overbearing yet well meaning sister Claire who comes in from New York. Hal was Roberts assistant in the Math department of the local university and is searching through hundreds of mostly incoherent notebooks left by Robert for any missing work from Roberts already impressive past. All three lives come together to reflect on and move on from the past. Helena and her family are circus performers. But Helena becomes dissatisfied with her life in the circus and wants to run away to a real life. When she confronts her parents about leaving the life of a circus performer, her mother becomes very ill and Helena blames herself. On the eve of her mothers impending surgery, Helena dreams of a fanciful land full of mythical creatures and ruled by two opposing queens. Helena is asked assist the inhabitants of this world to find the mirrormask to help their Queen of Light recover from her illness.
