Frank Beardsley is a high ranking officer in the US Coast Guard. He has recently lost his wife and is in charge of 8 kids. He runs a tight ship and home is no different. When he returns to the US Coast Guard Academy, and his home town, he runs into his high school flame Helen North. Helen has also lost her husband and has a houseful of 10 children. However, her house is a little less shipshape. When thier romance reignites, and they get married Frank and Helen are faced with the prospect of combining this large family. This bio-pic is the early life of crooner Johnny Cash. From his early childhood Johnny was always interested in music. However, his father was a hard man that was not impressed with music and dismissed it as a foolhearty pursuit. When Johnny's older brother dies in an industial-type accident the rift between Johnny and his father widens. Johnny leaves the family farm to enter the military but he has never been one for authority. Johnny's music career takes off as he goes through one marriage to first wife Vivian and meets June Carter.
