Anthony Swofford is a third generation US Marine recruit that is just entering boot camp. He is slated to be trained as an elite Marine sniper in preperation for the upcoming Desert Storm in Iraq. Staff Sgt. Sykes is a no-nonsense, Marine for life who recruited Swofford to be a sniper and is in charge of the elite Marine unit on their way to the Middle East. As they prepare for the impending invasion, the Marines wait for something - anything - to happen. Finally the war begins, but the Marines are left wondering about their impact.
