Maggie is graduating from high school and is expecting a fast car from her dad. Instead she receives a junked out old VW bug. Diappointed because she wants to join the family business of racing, Maggie has the car restored to it's former glory. Little does she know that this bug has quite a racing pedigree of his own. Herbie comes to life as Maggie enters a race, beating the reigning champion Trip Murphy. Murphy is beside himself for losing to a bug, and does is best to find out the secret behind the loveable bug that is Herbie.
