Andy Dufresne, a banker, has learned of an affair his wife is having. One night while outside in his car getting drunk trying to decide what to do his wife and her lover are murdered. Andy who passed has no alibi and is sentenced to life in prison. At first it is very difficult for him to get used to the brutal prison life, but his quiet strength soon earns him friends, even much of the prison staff. All the while his almost unemotional acceptance of his unjust punishment, hides his fierce determination to be free. Global warming has caused the polar icecaps to melt and flood the world leaving no dry land. The only way to get from place to place is by boat. Communities have developed floating atolls to protect from raiders. A mariner stops at one of these atolls for supplies. He encounters a woman with an orphan that has a strange tattoo on her back that may lead to dry land. The Deacon is also searching for the girl and attacks the atoll to capture her. Escaping with their lives and not much more, the Mariner begrudgenly assists in their search.
