Helena and her family are circus performers. But Helena becomes dissatisfied with her life in the circus and wants to run away to a real life. When she confronts her parents about leaving the life of a circus performer, her mother becomes very ill and Helena blames herself. On the eve of her mothers impending surgery, Helena dreams of a fanciful land full of mythical creatures and ruled by two opposing queens. Helena is asked assist the inhabitants of this world to find the mirrormask to help their Queen of Light recover from her illness.
