Dr. Ellie Arroway who has been fascinated with the stars since she was a young girl, is a radio astronomer listening to the stars. When she discovers a signal and decodes it nobobdy knows what to believe. Is it a device to destroy the earth or is it some sort of portal to another time. After the machine is built and the first attempt to run it is sabotaged, Dr. Arroway gets her chance. But after the life changing experience she has nobody believes her because the cameras did not record anything or so they thought.
