Opal is a preachers daughter that has moved yet again to a nameless mid-west town. Lonely and without friends, Opal claims a stray dog that created havoc in the local supermarket. Not having a name for the dog opal names him Winn-Dixie. Once Winn-Dixie has come into her life it will never be the same. Opal becomes curious about her mother and the mystery of her disappearance from Opal's life. Trying to find her place in the world Opal relies on Winn-Dixie to be her friend through it all.
