Carlito Brigante has just been released from prison on a technicality due to his sleazy lawyer. After a life in the Puerto Rican mafia he decides not to go back to that life. Instead in hopes to raise enough money to leave New York he opens a night club in which he renews an affair with a dancer. But his conections into the life make it almost impossible for him to leave it and eventually he returns to his life of crime and violence.
