Alex Bernier, a conflicted and rebellious young priest who belongs to the order know as the Carolingians, is sent to Rome to investigate the mysterious death of his mentor, who is the head of the order. His investigation of the body leads him to believe that it may be the work of a Sin Eater, a man who offers absolution for unforgivable sins by taking them upon himself. Alex acquires the help of his old friend Father Thomas and a troubled artist, but soon finds that he is not investigating anymore, he is now a part of it.
