Retired Col. William Ludlow dissaproves of the war and treatment of Native Americans. When the war breaks out his son Samuel enlists in the army leaving his wife, Susannah, behind. His other sons, Tristan and Alfred, enlist to protect their brother. But Samuel dies in war. Upon returning Tristan falls in love with Susannah but leaves to find himself. Alfred then shows his feelings for her. Not knowing if Tristan will return she marries Alfred, but when Tristan returns a battle breaks out between the brothers.
