Denzel Washington stars as John Q. Archibald, an ordinary man who works hard takes care of his family. His wife and son are all he lives for, but when his son falls ill and needs an emergency heart transplant, John cannot afford it and his health insurance will not cover it. John can think of only one more option, so he barricades himself in the emergency room and takes it hostage. He faces off against a police hostage negotiator and a chief who would like to bring a quick end to the situation.
