Perry Smith and Dick Hickock are two men who wander aimlessly around the country looking for people to rob. They target the home of a wealthy businessman and farmer but after breaking in they realize there is nothing in the house to steal. To avoid identification they kill the entire family, and then head for Mexico. Eventually the two return to the United States where they are arrested and sentenced to death.
