Tom Cruise stars as Captain Nathan Algren an alcoholic Civil War veteran turned gun spokesman. The Japanese Emperor, wanting to break away from the tradition of the Samurai protecting there territories, enlists Capt. Algren to train his troops. Although when injured in a battle Algren is captured by the Samurai. Soon he becomes part of the village he is being held hostage in, training to be what he was fighting against. Now the conflict exists of what side he wants to fight for.
