Robert Hays stars as Ted Striker, an ex-navy pilot who has had a deep fear of flying since the incident in the war. When his longtime girlfriend Elaine Dickinson, a stewardess at Trans American Airlines dumps him, Ted boards a plane in an attempt to get her back. As everyone on the plane is becoming ill due to food poisining, Ted seems to be the only one with piloting experience who is not sick. With a crew too sick to land a plane and an air traffic controller who has a drug problem, Ted is expected to land the plane before people start dying. These classes run by Dr. Buddy Rydell, are filled with very disturbed people, Dave believes he does not belong with. When another mishap occurs the Judge orders his therapy stepped up. Dr. Rydell's unorthodox style involves lewd comments about dave's girlfriend, making him confront everyone he's ever butted heads with among other things.
